Democrat defends DOJ's acquisition of GOP senators' phone records: 'You weren't being monitored'

House Democrats Respond to Surveillance Claims

House Democrats have come to the defense of the Justice Department, following recent accusations that private communications and calls of Republican senators were tracked in 2023. They stated emphatically, “You were not under surveillance.”

Rep. Daniel Goldman from New York addressed the situation after Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin claimed he was informed about the issue by Dan Bongino, a deputy director of the FBI. Johnson expressed frustration, asserting on X, “We were simply monitored for being Republicans.”

In response, Goldman reiterated, “You weren’t under surveillance.”

A former special adviser, Jack Smith, is said to have monitored the private communications of several Republican senators as part of the investigation into the January 6, 2021 Capitol Riot.

Documents reviewed indicated that Smith and his team, known as “Arctic Frost,” tracked communications from senators including Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, and Josh Hawley of Missouri, among others.

Goldman accused Johnson of being “shameless,” pointing out that efforts to counter Russian misinformation were made in 2020 and the department had communicated with the White House regarding events on January 6.

The FBI’s Kash Patel disclosed that they had identified a document titled “Cast Assistance,” dated September 27, 2023, which showed evidence of these tracking activities. An official mentioned that Smith’s team had access to phone numbers and locations of calls.

It’s said that the investigations could potentially link to discussions surrounding the 2020 election.

Records gathered by Smith’s team appear to have been obtained after issuing requests to major phone service providers in 2023.
