Controversy Surrounds Virginia Attorney General Candidate Jay Jones
Virginia Attorney General candidate Jay Jones is under fire from fellow liberals after making alarming remarks about a Republican lawmaker. Recent reports revealed that Jones had sent a text message fantasizing about shooting a GOP colleague and expressing violent thoughts about his family.
The National Review highlighted the message, which Jones allegedly sent in 2022. This revelation has led to significant backlash against him from various commentators. Some Democrats remain supportive of Jones, while MSNBC host Joe Scarborough has publicly criticized him, suggesting he should step away from the race. Scarborough expressed concern about the implications of Jones’s language, saying it doesn’t reflect well on him or the party.
“Perhaps we’ve all said things that don’t truly reflect our character. It might be unfair,” Scarborough said. But he insisted that Jones should consider withdrawing from the Attorney General contest for the sake of Virginia’s interests. He described the text messages as deeply troubling and warned they would harm the Democratic party and the nation.
Reportedly, one text was directed at Del. Carrie Coiner (R Chester), where Jones mentioned hypothetical violence against then-Speaker Todd Gilbert, saying that Gilbert would “receive bullets” if placed with two bad influences. In another message to Coiner, he speculated about the couple’s character, questioning whether they were “small fascists.”
Jones’s comments have arrived during a sensitive time politically, coming on the heels of other violent rhetoric in political discourse. The controversial text has sparked a wider discussion on the consequences of such language in public office.
Jones has yet to respond to the criticism and requests for comment regarding the messages.
