While Americans may embrace change, they also push back against the accompanying confusion. This is, notably, the third government shutdown during President Trump’s administration. One shutdown could be seen as a mere mishap, two as a coincidence, but three seems more like a troubling trend—leaving MAGA supporters at a distinct disadvantage.
A recent national poll by CBS News, conducted with YouGov.com, highlights that Congressional Democrats find themselves in a more favorable position amid the shutdown clash. The survey indicates that 39% of adults attribute the closure to President Trump, while 30% hold Democrats responsible.
Seizing the moment, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) challenged House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to a live debate. Johnson, who seems aware that he cannot justify the denial of affordable healthcare to millions, is missing an opportunity to clarify his position to frustrated Americans.
In this political dance, one in three individuals appears to spread the blame broadly. Trump’s approval rating regarding the shutdown is down by 20%. As the figurehead, he bears the brunt of the fallout. Yet, the Democratic Party’s rating isn’t stellar either, currently facing a negative 22% approval.
This partisan conflict sets the stage for both parties to rejuvenate their fortunes ahead of the upcoming elections. Democrats have a chance to capitalize, especially as Trump grapples with his inability to provide necessary health services.
However, Trump, as president, faces the greatest risk. With inflation weighing heavily on public concern, he previously assured voters he would tackle rising costs at the start of his next term. The inflation issue could significantly undermine Republican support in the midterms. Currently, Trump’s credibility on price management is low, sitting at a negative 32%. Three out of four respondents feel he isn’t prioritizing prices enough.
Employment and inflation remain top worries for the public, yet management appears ineffective. Many Americans believe Trump’s policies are hurting the economy. After nine months into his second term, medical costs continue to escalate. Democrats are framing this as a chance to stop more hikes, putting Trump and his followers in the hot seat just over a year before the midterm elections.
Kudos are due for Congressional Democrats who are bravely opposing Trump’s stance on extending the Affordable Care Act subsidies, which increase premiums and strip support for many. Democratic leaders remain steadfast, pushing back against Trump’s refusal to reduce healthcare costs, which poses risks to many struggling American families while protecting the wealth of his billionaire allies.
CBS’s findings reveal vulnerabilities for both parties. Many perceive Democrats as weak and Republicans as extreme. If Democrats take decisive action, they could showcase their capability to govern effectively. Meanwhile, Republicans’ relentless focus on tax cuts raises concerns about their commitment to the middle class and the economically disadvantaged.
As this shutdown standoff drags on, Democrats need to assert themselves to secure affordable healthcare for everyone. Republicans have a long history of opposing programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act. Should Trump emerge victorious in this budget conflict, vital services could be at risk, furthering MAGA’s agenda against key welfare programs.
