Judge extends deadline to appoint new prosecutor in Trump’s Georgia election case

Authorities in Georgia have recently taken control of a criminal case regarding the alleged interference in the 2020 election by President Trump and his associates. It’s expected that a prosecutor will be appointed to oversee this matter on Thursday.

Judge Scott McAfee has directed the Prosecuting Attorneys Council (PAC) to submit names by November 14, extending the original two-week timeline, although it’s still shorter than what the PAC had hoped for.

The transition in oversight occurred after a Georgia court disqualified Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from handling the Trump case due to the revelation of her romantic involvement with a prosecutor assigned to it.

The PAC, which provides support to prosecutors and law enforcement agencies throughout Georgia, is responsible for finding legal representation in situations where a district attorney’s office has a conflict.

Peter Skandalakis, the executive director of the PAC, communicated with McAfee that the intricate nature of this case would require considerable time and resources to appoint an interim district attorney for prosecution.

He has requested an extension until 90 days following the PAC’s receipt of the case file, which would likely push the timeline into early next year. However, McAfee has only granted a more limited extension of about one month.

This isn’t the first time the PAC has opted for a slower approach. Following Willis’s disbarment related to an indictment attempt against Georgia Lt. Gov. Bert Jones, it took the PAC a lengthy 21 months to appoint Skandalakis himself to lead the investigation, which ultimately resulted in no charges being filed.

Two years back, Willis charged Trump and more than a dozen of his allies with racketeering, accusing them of conspiring over a period to unlawfully overturn President Biden’s election victory in 2020; Trump has pleaded not guilty.

This case is one of four criminal charges that Trump faces as he aims for a return to the presidency.

A jury in New York recently found Trump guilty of 34 counts related to falsifying business records in connection with hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels. However, federal charges against him regarding the mishandling of classified documents and efforts to overturn Biden’s election victory were dismissed after Trump secured a second term.
