White House Criticizes Schumer Amid Ongoing Shutdown
The White House has expressed strong disapproval of comments made by Senator Chuck Schumer from New York regarding the current government shutdown, labeling them as “disgusting and revealing.”
Schumer, in discussions with a Washington news organization, reportedly conveyed optimism for Democrats as the shutdown drags on, saying, “Every day is getting better for us. We’ve been anticipating this for quite some time, and health care was always going to be a key focus as September 30 approached.”
Republicans, on the other hand, allege that the shutdown is a move to placate left-leaning factions within the Democratic Party, especially in Schumer’s home state, coinciding with the rising candidacy of Zoran Mamdani in the New York mayoral race and rumors of a potential primary challenge from Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Jackson remarked, “Chuck Schumer has openly admitted that Democrats are inflicting pain on the American public in their pursuit of free health care for illegal immigrants.” She continued, emphasizing the impact of the shutdown on ordinary citizens, stating, “People are losing pay, air travelers are experiencing delays, and military families face food insecurity.” Jackson urged for a resolution, declaring it unacceptable for Americans to suffer during this time.
In response to requests for comments, Schumer’s office shared highlights from his Senate floor remarks. He argued the situation is worsening for the American public because Republicans refuse to negotiate. Schumer asserted that the effort to improve health care and end the shutdown is gaining traction, as constituents are becoming increasingly aware of how the situation impacts their finances and future.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt echoed these sentiments, criticizing Schumer’s perspective on the shutdown, stating, “While normal Americans are grappling with the consequences of missed paychecks, Schumer claims it’s a good time for Democrats. This is a revealing and troubling attitude.” She condemned the Democrats’ approach as harmful to the public.
Meanwhile, the White House announced that it plans to extend the effects of the shutdown. The Office of Management and Budget has suggested that furloughed federal employees may not receive back pay, contradicting a 2019 law meant to protect such workers in similar situations. This uncertainty could complicate efforts in Congress to secure a funding package as pressure mounts on Democrats, with former President Trump blaming them for the present crisis.
