New LGBTIQ+ Equality Strategy Adopted by European Commission

The European Commission has announced the adoption of a new LGBTIQ+ Equality Strategy for 2026-2030, emphasizing the importance of love and freedom. The plan prioritizes protecting individuals from violence, ensuring equal rights, and promoting equality across the board.

One key aspect of this strategy includes introducing measures aimed at “combating conversion practices.” The Commission argues that these practices are not only “medically incorrect” but also lead to severe pain, suffering, and long-lasting psychological and physical damage. There’s a focus on addressing issues like “intersex genital mutilation” and the “forced medicalization of transgender individuals” as part of the initiative.

Furthermore, the strategy seeks to enhance the existing EU framework on hate speech by incorporating criminal protections for those targeted based on sexual orientation and gender identity, in addition to race and gender. It also notes a noticeable “lack of progress” in standardizing the definition of hate crimes online among the 27 EU member states.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the digital services law, which obligates tech companies to eliminate “illegal content,” including hate speech. Major online platforms have been urged to assess and mitigate risks associated with such content.

While the recommendations may not hold binding power, the European Commission insists that the principles are aimed at ensuring that all individuals in the EU feel secure and free to express their true selves. The document also mentions the outcomes from the first LGBTIQ+ equality strategy introduced in 2020, noting that 13 member states adopted national plans by 2025 and public approval for same-sex relationships has grown.

The Commission has pledged to monitor compliance with EU laws and will not hesitate to act should it be necessary to uphold EU values. Additionally, it has encouraged all member states to implement national LGBTIQ+ equality plans by 2027, suggesting a more substantial role for Brussels in shaping national gender and sexuality policies.
