Charming Lighthouse Home Hits the Market
A unique lighthouse home, steeped in history, has just become available on the Chesapeake Bay for $450,000. However, reaching it requires a boat, according to the owner.
This three-bedroom residence, known as Smith Point Lighthouse, sits about three miles from the Virginia coast. It offers a secluded spot ideal for those who crave adventure, coupled with stunning views of the water, says Dave McNally, 74.
“The best part? You get a full 360-degree view of the sea. It feels like being in an aquarium, with everything else revolving around you,” he shared.
“One peaceful evening, I just sat there and listened to the dolphins surfacing. It was one of those moments that really made this place special,” he reminisced.
Yet, the lighthouse, which McNally acquired for $170,000 in 2005, has its quirks. “Certain waters can be treacherous for getting in and out. During storms, waves can reach up to 12 feet,” he explained.
“But the structure is solid; it doesn’t budge,” he added, offering some reassurance.
To enter the home, which McNally and his family used as a summer retreat, you have to climb a ladder between two windows at the lighthouse’s weathered base.
During his time there, McNally would take weekly boat trips to the shore for groceries, relying on a large boat he humorously calls his “floating pickup truck.”
Constructed in 1897, the lighthouse comprises four stories. The first level currently serves as both kitchen and living space, according to the listing.
The second floor contains three bedrooms, topped by a wave-watch room and a lantern room.
McNally moved to this location from Michigan because of his love for water and boating. “I guess you could call me a water junkie,” he said, looking back on his adventurous spirit.
Now, he’s wanting to sell as he welcomes a grandson into the family. As reported by homes.com, he emphasizes that the property is being sold “as is,” citing safety concerns for young children in this unique location.
