Final Debate Highlights Tensions in New Jersey Gubernatorial Race
In a heated final debate, Jack Ciattarelli, the Republican candidate for governor in New Jersey, criticized his Democratic opponent, Rep. Mikie Sherrill, accusing her of running a campaign filled with “lies.” Following the debate, Ciattarelli specifically claimed that Sherrill misled the public regarding his involvement in a Naval Academy cheating scandal, as well as his alleged ties to the opioid crisis.
Ciattarelli stated, “She needs to come clean to the state of New Jersey about why she was disciplined so harshly at the Naval Academy.” This accusation stems from records released earlier this year by the National Archives and Records Administration, which indicated that Sherrill was barred from participating in her graduation ceremony.
Sherrill acknowledged that while she wasn’t directly accused of wrongdoing, she had faced disciplinary action for not reporting others involved in the scandal. She maintained her innocence and explained that the situation was currently being investigated, adding, “What really needs to be answered is why my opponent still won’t take responsibility for the release of these records.” She pointed out that his team had access to them, raising questions about his campaign’s transparency.
During the debate, Sherrill suggested that Ciattarelli either lacked competency or was being deceitful when asked about his campaign’s handling of sensitive information. Despite Sherrill’s clarifications, Ciattarelli remained skeptical. “We believe she either deceived herself or lied to investigators,” he remarked on a radio show.
In turn, Sherrill accused Ciattarelli of contributing to the opioid epidemic through his connections with pharmaceutical assistance programs, arguing that his actions had dire consequences for many lives in New Jersey. “He made millions by collaborating with some of the worst criminals, spreading propaganda that said opioids were safe,” she declared, suggesting that such affiliations had devastating impacts on the community.
Ciattarelli dismissed her charges, labeling them as hopeless and denied any involvement in the opioid crisis. With Election Day approaching fast, both the New Jersey and Virginia races are under scrutiny as indicators of public sentiment regarding federal policies.
