Vladimir Putin, the Russian leader, has made remarks aimed at aligning himself with President Trump, critiquing the Nobel Peace Prize committee for sometimes recognizing individuals he believes haven’t contributed to peace.
When questioned by reporters about whether Trump was unjustly awarded this esteemed accolade, which was presented recently, Putin distanced himself from the decision.
“There are instances where the Nobel Peace Prize has gone to individuals who did nothing to promote peace,” Putin stated during a summit of former Soviet nations in Tajikistan, expressing his discontent.
“Good and bad people are celebrated, and then, a short while later, we wonder why. He hasn’t really accomplished anything. In my perspective, these choices have diminished the award’s prestige.”
This comment seems aimed at gaining favor with Trump while taking a swipe at Barack Obama, who was awarded the same prize just nine months into his presidency.
Trump has often accused Obama of being unaware of why he received the award, claiming it was for “nothing.”
Putin proceeded to commend Trump for facilitating a ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing that the U.S. President is making significant efforts to tackle longstanding crises.
“He’s genuinely doing a lot to resolve these complex issues that have persisted for years, even decades,” Putin remarked.
He further claimed that if the Gaza agreement is put into action, it would mark a “historic” moment.
Meanwhile, Trump expressed his frustration with Putin related to the stalled peace efforts in Ukraine. On his social platform, he acknowledged Putin’s comments, saying, “Thank you, President Putin!”
Trump had aspirations of winning the Nobel Prize for achieving a hard-fought deal between Israel and Hamas following a protracted period of violence in Gaza.
The Nobel Committee in Norway made the decision to award the Nobel Prize two days before the peace deal was finalized, recognizing Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Colina Machado for her efforts.
