Fetterman criticizes Democrats for conveying the 'wrong message' about the shutdown.

Fetterman Opposes Government Shutdown

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman expressed strong opposition to the ongoing government shutdown during an appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures.” He criticized both parties, arguing that their actions send the “wrong message” about the situation to Americans and the world.

“Shutting down the government is not the solution; it’s simply the wrong message,” he stated. Fetterman emphasized the importance of communication and collaboration in resolving issues, particularly in healthcare.

In an exclusive conversation, the Pennsylvania Democratic Party asserted that they would “never” support a government shutdown, expressing concern over those unwilling to negotiate. Fetterman reflected on previous warnings he made about the repercussions of such a shutdown, noting how it negatively impacts vulnerable Americans.

He mentioned, “The real victims here are ordinary Americans who may suffer the consequences of this stalemate.” Fetterman underscored the necessity for discussions around extended healthcare options and tax deductions, suggesting that some Republicans might share this viewpoint.

As the shutdown continued from October 1, Republicans labeled it a “Schumer shutdown,” while Democrats urged for bipartisan negotiations on healthcare tax credits expiring soon.

Additionally, Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto from Nevada and Independent Senator Angus King of Maine joined Fetterman in supporting stopgap funding measures aimed at keeping the government operational. However, the proposed bill requires 60 votes to move forward, meaning Republicans need additional support to pass it.
