Diane Keaton made her last public appearance at Jack Nicholson’s birthday celebration, shortly before her passing at 79.
Ed Begley Jr. shared, “I met her just recently at Jack Nicholson’s birthday party, and it was wonderful to see her there,” just hours after news of her death broke.
While he didn’t specify when the celebration took place, Nicholson’s 88th birthday was in April.
The actor reflected fondly on working with Keaton, describing her as a “great actress” and “a wonderful woman.” He recounted, “I played her brother in an HBO film called ‘Running Mates’ with Ed Harris. I’m grateful to have known her over the years.”
This last month, Keaton appeared vibrant and well in her Instagram post honoring National Pet Day.
In the wake of her unexpected death, a friend informed People magazine that Keaton’s health had quickly deteriorated in recent months, but she and her close friends preferred to keep it private.
Her longtime friend Carol Bayer Sager expressed her surprise at how much weight Keaton had lost, noting that they had last seen each other a month ago.
People close to her mentioned that she “loved” her neighborhood in Brentwood, California, and was still walking her dog regularly until a few months ago.
It came as a shock to many that Keaton, who had struggled with skin cancer and bulimia throughout her life, listed her “dream home” for sale in March.
Her family is requesting privacy during this difficult time, as her representative announced her passing.
Reports indicate that the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to her residence shortly after 8 a.m. that morning and transported her to a local hospital. The cause of her death has yet to be disclosed.
