Letitia James and Zoran Mamdani Rally Together Amid Fraud Indictment

On Monday night, New York Attorney General Letitia James joined New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani at a rally, marking her first public appearance since being indicted on fraud charges. She reiterated her commitment to stand against what she called President Trump’s “aggressive policies.”

With just three weeks left until Election Day, the “Our Time Has Come” event in Washington Heights showcased the support James has within the community, despite facing federal charges. Mr. Mamdani was not alone; he was accompanied by Congress members Nydia Velasquez and Adriana Espaillat, and City Councilmember Chi Oce.

“Thank you, Attorney General Tish James,” Mamdani expressed, highlighting her ongoing fight for New Yorkers. “Now it’s time for us to fight for you.”

Recently, U.S. Attorney Lindsay Harrigan announced that a federal grand jury had indicted James on charges including bank fraud and providing false statements to a financial institution.

Political Dynamics Intensify

James said at the rally, “I know what it feels like to be attacked just for doing your job,” underscoring her resilience in the face of adversity. She insisted, “I will not give in. I will not break.”

This gathering was particularly significant as it was James’ first public event since the announcement of her indictment. Supporting Mamdani, she made her intentions clear: “Are you coming for me? Are you coming for all of us?” The crowd cheered in response, with estimates of around 3,000 attendees.

In her address, James labeled the indictment a continuation of Trump’s use of the judicial system for “political retribution.” She expressed her determination to keep fighting for justice and New Yorkers, promising that she wouldn’t stop or give up.

As New York’s attorney general, James filed a civil lawsuit against Trump, accusing him and his organization of inflating asset values for financial gain. A judge found Trump liable for this fraud.

“We don’t have time for pettiness,” James stated emphatically, urging everyone to press forward. She admired Mamdani for his commitment to building a better New York City.

Mamdani joined other Democratic leaders in condemning the indictment as an “attack on our city,” emphasizing that James is standing before the same court that upheld the law against Trump.

James expressed her support for Mamdani in the mayoral race, asserting that he shares her commitment to creating a better New York.

While Mamdani positions himself as a democratic socialist, Trump has labeled him a “communist” since he won the Democratic nomination. Should he win the election, Mamdani has vowed to fight Trump’s policies in the city, though Trump has threatened to cut federal funding if Mamdani does not comply with certain expectations.

On November 4, New Yorkers will choose a new mayor, following Mayor Eric Adams’ suspension of his re-election effort last month. Mamdani currently stands as the frontrunner against former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment on these developments.
