CBS News employees will not face consequences for disregarding memo from new leader.

CBS News staff will not face consequences for not informing their new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, about their daily tasks, based on an internal memo from the Writers Guild of America East. Recently, the employees were instructed to provide details on their duties, but the Guild advised them to wait until the network addressed their questions first.

The memo stated, “You will not be penalized if you do not reply to the email, and your participation is optional. If you do choose to respond, that will also not lead to any disciplinary actions.”

Weiss, who took on the role of editor-in-chief last week following the acquisition of The Free Press by Paramount, aims to apply equal scrutiny to both major political parties. She requested that staff detail their roles and provide feedback on operations, which raised some concerns and led the Guild to seek more clarity regarding management processes.

The Guild is inquiring about who received the emails from Weiss, how the responses might be used, and whether any failure to respond could result in negative outcomes. They also want to know if CBS intends to use AI to analyze these responses or how to ensure an unbiased approach.

CBS assured the Guild that the responses would be seen primarily by Weiss and her chief of staff, and emphasized that no one would be disciplined or dismissed based on these communications. The company indicated that the purpose of the request was simply to help Weiss familiarize herself with her staff and guide future discussions.

Furthermore, CBS confirmed it would not utilize AI for reviewing the responses. The network has yet to comment officially on the situation.
