New York Mayoral Candidate Stands Firm on Netanyahu Arrest Promise

Zoran Mamdani, a candidate for mayor of New York City, is maintaining his commitment to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he assumes office and Netanyahu visits the city.

“New York City must adhere to international criminal law,” Mamdani stated in a recent interview with a publication. However, this stance has raised concerns among some of his allies, especially given that the United States does not recognize the authority of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue such an arrest warrant for Netanyahu.

Several leaders within Mamdani’s support group, including Murad Awadeh from the New York Immigration Coalition, expressed that prioritizing the arrest of Netanyahu is not their main concern.

In response to Mamdani’s position, U.S. Representative Jerry Nadler described the proposal as “totally unrealistic,” emphasizing that New York City lacks the authority for such actions.

Mamdani first aired his views regarding Netanyahu during an interview last December. He firmly stated that, if elected, his administration would not welcome Netanyahu to the city, insisting that New York’s values align with international law. “It’s time for our actions to reflect that,” he responded.

Despite his strong stance on Netanyahu, Mamdani also issued a statement celebrating the release of Israeli hostages from Hamas captivity. He expressed his hope that the recent ceasefire would lead to lasting peace, acknowledging the pain felt by many New Yorkers over the years.

Mamdani concluded, “Our tax dollars have funded actions that raise moral questions, and we must confront the accountability that comes with such decisions.”
