North Carolina Woman Accused of Attempted Murder of Husband

A woman from North Carolina is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly drugging her husband’s energy drink to incapacitate him.

Cheryl Harris Gates, 43, was taken into custody last week for allegedly adding a prescription medication to her husband’s Celsius energy drink, aiming to cause a blackout or incapacitation, as reported by the New York Post.

According to authorities, Gates’ husband claimed he felt incapacitated on two occasions, July 12 and August 18, after discovering his drink contained a foreign controlled substance. It’s worth noting that during this time, the couple was living apart.

Reports indicate that between July 8 and September 29, Gates conducted several searches on ChatGPT about incapacitating and lethal drugs. Investigators found evidence, including online records, that suggested she had purchased items to carry out a plan to poison her husband. When authorities checked her home, they uncovered capsule-filling kits, syringes, medical droppers, medicines, and scales.

In addition to the poison allegations, Gates is also accused of placing a tracking device on her husband’s car and even breaking his window.

At the time of her arrest, Gates was employed as a pediatric occupational therapist at a local school, though the school district has not yet responded regarding her current employment situation.

Gates faces charges including attempted murder, stalking, criminal damage to property, and food or drink contamination intended to cause incapacitation. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Department has not provided further comments as of now.

In a recent court appearance, Gates was denied bail and is set to return to court on October 30. So far, an attorney for her has not been located.
