Florida Home Invasion Ends with Arrests
In a startling incident in Florida, two alleged robbers reportedly used Apple AirTags to track a couple, leading to a home invasion where the pair was briefly held at gunpoint. Authorities have described the event as “every family’s worst nightmare.”
Luis Charles, 26, and Odaldi Maldonado Rodriguez, 32, are accused of attaching a tracker to the couple’s SUV before ambushing them outside their home in Odessa on August 19. This information was shared by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Surveillance footage from the sheriff’s office captures the men approaching the couple as they exited their vehicle in the driveway, then forcing them into their garage.
One suspect, dressed in a high-visibility vest and bright green shirt, brandished a weapon as he grabbed the woman from the passenger seat, while the other, wearing a hoodie and mask, took hold of the male driver.
Despite the danger, the woman resisted, which apparently led to her being taken into the house by the armed man.
“It’s every family’s worst nightmare to be ambushed at gunpoint in the very place you think they are safest,” remarked Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister.
Luckily, an alarm was triggered inside the home, prompting the two suspects to flee before police arrived.
On October 8, police arrested Charles during a traffic stop in Tampa. Body camera footage captured his arrest. Shortly after, Maldonado-Rodriguez was apprehended in nearby Pasco County.
Both suspects face multiple charges, including armed robbery, armed kidnapping, robbery using a firearm, false imprisonment, and unlawfully installing a tracking device.
“Thanks to the work of our detectives, these dangerous criminals are now behind bars and where they belong, allowing our victims and community to breathe a bit easier,” stated Chronister.
While in custody, Charles reportedly assaulted someone within a certain age range who was connected to him by family or custodial authority, according to prison records reviewed.
Currently, the two suspects are held at the Hillsborough County Jail without the possibility of bail.
Additionally, Charles is under a “Border Patrol-Federal, ICE Notification” hold.
