The government shutdown by Democrats is causing negative effects in Virginia.

When the government shut down two weeks ago, the impact was immediately felt in Virginia. This situation arose not because House Republicans were inactive; we had already done our part by passing a bill to fund the government.

Every Republican in Virginia’s House of Representatives voted in favor of keeping the government operational and ensuring vital services continued for our constituents. We approved a straightforward, short-term continuing resolution—a common approach that has enjoyed bipartisan support for years.

This vote wasn’t some political maneuver or mere messaging. There were no hidden agendas involved. It was a responsible decision aimed at maintaining government operations while discussions about a comprehensive funding bill are ongoing. Importantly, it avoided the typical side deals, policy riders, and wish lists that usually complicate the process.

The goal was clear: to safeguard the paychecks, services, and stability of the American people, especially in Virginia, where the repercussions of government inaction are most acute.

However, Senate Democrats had a different agenda. They turned down the clean continuing resolution and pushed for over $1.5 trillion in spending unrelated to essential priorities, like providing medical care for undocumented immigrants and funding liberal media. This choice signaled a preference for political leverage over basic governance.

It’s worth noting that Senate Democrats have previously criticized the outcomes they now find themselves contributing to.

Earlier this year, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer remarked that government shutdowns victimize the most vulnerable Americans who rely on federal programs for food, healthcare, and financial stability. He said such shutdowns severely impact communities that depend on government services to function.

So, what exactly has changed? Why did they opt for a government shutdown this time around?

Now, even with the government closed, Virginians are not just hearing about it; they’re living it. Close to 150,000 federal employees reside in Virginia and work with agencies like the Department of Defense and Langley Air Force Base.

This shutdown means that active duty military personnel have to work without pay, which delays disability benefits for veterans, hampers small business loans, and contributes to the suspension of WIC benefits for 127,000 mothers and children in Virginia. Additionally, FEMA’s ability to issue flood insurance is halted, posing significant risks during hurricane season.

These issues are not distant policy matters. They create tangible effects on real lives that our entire delegation, both Democrats and Republicans, is here to represent.

Regrettably, Virginians are now facing the consequences of political maneuvering.

We’ve long been aware that government shutdowns bring about unwanted disruption and harm economic stability. Yet, when the chance arose to avert this crisis, Senate Democrats chose to escalate it in hopes of furthering their political goals.

This is not what leadership looks like. It’s political theatrics that come at Virginians’ expense.

This shutdown didn’t have to happen. The House has played its part and voted to fund the government, aiming to minimize unnecessary hardship. Now, it’s time for Senate Democrats to do the same.

The political games must end. The government needs to reopen, and we must prioritize the people we serve: military personnel, veterans, working families, and small businesses.
