Controversy Surrounding MAGA Hat in Magic Tournaments
Supporters of former President Trump have expressed frustration over being asked to leave various venues, including stores and card tournaments, due to their “Make America Great Again” hats.
Recently, well-known Magic: The Gathering player Joe Brennan found himself in the spotlight after being banned from upcoming tournaments, reportedly due to behavioral complaints linked to an anonymous source. Yet many argue that the true issue is simply other players’ discomfort with his MAGA hat.
In fact, one participant created a playmat featuring a macabre image of President Trump’s severed head beside a guillotine.
Following Brennan’s suspension, numerous online voices labeled him in derogatory terms, and conversations surfaced questioning who had made people “offensive” with their political hats. Discussions of imposing stricter limits on him emerged as well.
The Ongoing Dispute
While Brennan has been a divisive figure among liberals for years, his status as a top player and a champion of vintage Magic cards complicates the narrative. Despite the controversies surrounding his hat, he remains a prominent figure. A previous article accused him of wearing the hat “knowingly to provoke,” and it remains accessible online.
A user recently posed the question on Twitter: “Now that offensive behavior is punishable, can we just get rid of Joe Brennan forever?”
Nevertheless, following his ban, a significant number of players rallied in support of Brennan, drafting a letter suggesting a more constructive path forward. Their reasonable appeal, however, seemed to infuriate others even more. Brennan stated he felt pressured to contribute to charity as a form of reparative justice to prove he was on the “right side.”
Brennan criticized these actions as “terrible,” expressing discomfort with individuals sharing photos and messages that promoted the ostracization of those who supported him.
A Struggle for Acceptance
This incident is merely the latest chapter in Brennan’s lengthy battle against what he perceives as a persistent bias. He believes that he, like many others, should be free to express political sentiments through attire.
Brennan characterized the Magic community as leaning towards progressive views, noting that tournaments are often filled with left-wing symbols that go unchallenged. He recalled instances where memorabilia supporting Bernie Sanders, President Obama, and even pro-Palestinian slogans were unremarkable in competitive settings.
“At one event, a player laid down a mat depicting Trump’s decapitated head next to a guillotine,” he noted.
Political Bias in Venues
Brennan pointed out that this progressive slant permeates even the physical spaces where games are played. He stated that he has faced expulsion from several stores—sometimes even ones he had been frequenting for years—upon entering with a MAGA hat.
“Often, I’d walk into a store, and without any discussion, they’d simply say, ‘You need to leave,’ or ‘Just take off your hat,'” he recounted.
Despite his cordial relationship with event organizers, he experienced public banishment at least once, feeling that it was done for show.
“As soon as I stepped in, they kicked me out in front of everyone, seemingly trying to make a spectacle of it,” he shared.
Yet, through it all, Brennan strives to keep a positive outlook. Recently, he even reached out to the organization that had previously banned him to find a potential resolution.
To his surprise, they managed to agree on a statement together.
Seeking Common Ground
Brennan, along with a fellow gamer and attorney, approached Card Titan, the organizers of the 11th annual tournament scheduled in Pittsburgh.
In a post on X, Card Titan signaled some core values regarding political expression. Brennan was taken aback when the organization consented to publish a joint statement emphasizing the need for unity and asserting that “wearing a MAGA hat” shouldn’t justify exclusion from any event.
“I couldn’t believe Card Titan took that stance; it’s a significant shift from the past,” he explained, adding that he doesn’t feel discriminated against by them like he has been by other companies previously. However, he speculates that whoever lodged the original complaint may have been motivated by political bias.
Brennan’s determination to achieve a positive resolution is evident. He describes moments where he chose to remain silent to promote harmony.
Demonstrating Integrity
For instance, during the 2019 New York Stock Exchange Open Magic tournament, he promised to return the prize earnings to the organizers to help fund future events, despite being told that he hadn’t covered his entry fee.
“I told them not to worry—I was going to win and donate the prize back to support the next tournament,” Brennan recalled, and he followed through on that commitment.
After winning the tournament, the prize consisted of several high-value cards, allowing the event to continue the following year. Nevertheless, when the next tournament rolled around, other players circulated a petition to have him banned, despite his earlier philanthropic gesture.
“They had no idea that without my help, that tournament would have never happened,” he said, visibly affected by the lack of recognition for his contributions.
In the face of adversity, Brennan remains hopeful, suggesting the need for unity in an increasingly toxic environment. He urges those who hear his message to consider whether this is the world they wish to inhabit a decade from now.
Brennan is set to participate again in Card Titan tournaments starting in 2026, but the organization has not provided any public comments regarding the situation.
