Bolton Indicted for Mishandling Classified Information
Former national security adviser John Bolton has been indicted for improperly handling classified materials. According to reports, the indictment includes eight counts of transmitting national defense information and ten counts of possession of national defense information.
The indictment alleges that from around April 9, 2018, until at least August 22, 2025, Bolton misused his role as National Security Advisor by sharing over 1,000 pages of sensitive information, categorized as Top Secret/SCI, with two unauthorized individuals. It also states that he illegally stored national defense documents and memos containing classified information at his home in Montgomery County, Maryland.
The documents sent included details about potential attacks from hostile groups, plans for missile launches by foreign adversaries, and covert actions involving U.S. intelligence activities. They allegedly outlined sensitive government actions, enemy awareness of U.S. strategies, and classified intelligence methods.
All the documents in question were classified as “top secret.” How this will all unfold is uncertain, but it raises some serious questions about the protection of sensitive national information. The FBI conducted a search of Bolton’s home in August, focusing on the classified documents believed to be in his possession.
The search warrant revealed a list of items taken, including two iPhones, three computers, and a hard drive, along with other technological devices. Notably, there were also items described as “printed daily activities,” and documents related to former President Donald Trump.
The investigation originates from concerns over Bolton’s handling of classified documents, which allegedly began several years ago but was reportedly put on hold during the Biden administration. This situation adds another layer of complexity to Bolton’s controversial history, especially given his previous critiques of Trump’s management of classified information.
Bolton, who served in Trump’s first term from 2018 to 2019, has had a rocky relationship with the former president since his departure. He criticized Trump’s response to the classified documents saga that led to the FBI’s raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate and subsequent indictments.
However, Bolton has also praised Trump’s military actions, making his stance rather complicated. He has publicly expressed concerns about Trump’s capacity for leadership, while also supporting certain military strategies. Bolton has been under threats from Iran for years following a U.S. attack that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, highlighting the dangerous environment surrounding his career.
