Sayville’s Patrick Cohn Aims to Reach 6-0

Patrick Cohn is leading the Sayville Golden Flashes this season as an undefeated quarterback. With a family connection to former Notre Dame QB Jack Coyne, the 17-year-old looks forward to their upcoming game against rival Westhampton, hoping to improve to 6-0.

“Every day is really fun. Just going out, playing football, and hanging out with the dogs,” Cohn shared, speaking fondly of his teammates.

Last year, Sayville was unbeaten until a tough 31-28 defeat against Garden City in the Long Island title game. This year, they are determined to do better. “We added some great players, and they’re eager to get on the field,” said Lehigh, acknowledging the team’s hard work. “We want to keep pushing ourselves.”

Jack, currently with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders, has played an essential role in Patrick’s development, mentoring him before his senior year. “We spent weekends on the field, no matter the weather. He taught me footwork, reads, progressions—everything,” Patrick recounted.

“He’s an excellent trainer and teacher. He really knows how to explain the game,” he added.

Jack, a 2017 graduate who helped lead the Flashes to a championship in 2015 before playing at the University of Wisconsin and Notre Dame, remains involved with the team. Head coach Robert Hoss, who has worked with both cousins, shared that Jack expressed a desire to practice with the team. “He wanted to keep up with what we were doing and even asked to access our Huddle account to watch practices and games,” Hoss said.

Patrick is particularly inspired by his family’s support, emphasizing Jack’s positive influence. “Patrick understands that Jack is always in his corner. Even when giving feedback, it’s always encouraging,” Hoss noted, suggesting that this connection has really helped Patrick grow.

As the team looks to achieve success in their quest this season, Patrick expressed a laid-back attitude. “Honestly, we’re not too focused on the pressure. It’s really about just having fun and playing the game we love,” he said, reflecting on his motivations and goals for the season.
