Illinois State University Faculty Member Arrested for Disruptive Behavior
Last week, a faculty member at Illinois State University found himself in trouble after allegedly overturning a table set up by a Turning Point USA student group and damaging their promotional materials.
Derek Lopez, who is 27, is a graduate student and teaching assistant. He can be seen on video discussing something with a man near the table, which was intended to promote an event featuring political comedian Alex Stein. In a rather bold moment, Lopez flipped the table, making a particularly striking comment: “Well, since Jesus did it, I know I have to do it too, right?”
After the incident, he reportedly walked away with a dismissive wave and a sneer, saying, “Thank you, everyone, have a nice day.”
According to authorities with the Illinois State University Police, Lopez is also suspected of interfering with another information table run by a different student organization. He was arrested on Friday and is facing charges of disorderly conduct alongside criminal damage to property. The police mentioned that the ongoing investigation could potentially lead to more charges or disciplinary actions from the university.
“We are committed to protecting the First Amendment rights and the safety of everyone in our campus community,” stated Police Chief Aaron Woodruff. He emphasized the importance of understanding free speech rights and constructively addressing disagreements within the university setting.
This incident may add to the context surrounding Turning Point USA, especially considering the recent tragic event involving its co-founder, Charlie Kirk, who was murdered at a gathering in Utah last month.
