Jared Kushner Discusses Gaza Ceasefire on “60 Minutes”
On a recent episode of “60 Minutes,” Jared Kushner, son-in-law to former President Donald Trump, unpacked the complexities of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and peace talks following years of conflict in the region. The conversation featured U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who highlighted that their approach differed from traditional diplomacy, leaning instead on methods akin to those used in real estate dealings. This involved not just discussions but “presidential promises, protections, and punishments.”
Kushner described the overall situation as ultimately “simple,” with the main challenge being the “stupid wordplay” that diplomats have tangled with for decades. He expressed hope for the hostages’ return and emphasized a desire for a ceasefire that both parties could honor while facilitating humanitarian aid.
During the discussion, host Leslie Stahl pressed Kushner and Witkoff on their previous business interactions with Middle Eastern nations, raising questions about potential conflicts of interest. Kushner defended their experience, stating, “What some might see as a conflict, Steve and I view as trust and understanding built through years of work.” He noted that this trust was crucial in securing the agreement that released hostages and fostered cooperation between Israelis and Qataris.
Witkoff recounted a poignant moment following the signing of the agreement, which involved Israelis and Qataris embracing one another, a gesture he found profoundly encouraging. “It’s heartwarming,” he said, reflecting on the broader implications for peace in the region.
The ceasefire was formally agreed upon on October 8, after nearly two years of conflict that began in 2023. However, just before the air date of the episode, Israel reportedly accused Hamas of violating the cease-fire, momentarily halting progress towards a lasting resolution.
