Giants Kicker Reflects on Missed Opportunities After Loss
DENVER — Jude McAtamney expressed clarity after the disappointing game against the Broncos, where the Giants fell short 33-32.
During the game, McAtamney missed the extra point following the Giants’ second touchdown, along with a crucial 39-yard field goal attempt at the end that could have given them a chance in overtime.
“That’s my responsibility,” he shared at his locker. “I missed a vital point in an important situation. I’m not ashamed of that.”
He noted, “The snap and hold were good. It was on me not executing my kicks properly. I won’t let my team down by dodging my mistakes.”
The miss, he recalled, veered off to the right, and he was quite surprised. “Honestly, when it came off my foot, I thought it was good. I looked up, and it felt huge. I was just as shocked as everyone else.”
When asked if there were issues with the playing field, he replied, “Not at all. We practiced well all week. It’s just one of those things. When the opportunities arise, we need to make those kicks.”
The initial extra point attempt went wide left, contributing to the nail-biting loss.
McAtamney didn’t shy away from his role in the game. “I have to take the kick. I won’t avoid it. I take full responsibility,” he said.
Special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial weighed in on McAtamney’s past performances. “With his experience last season and in the preseason, we have confidence in him, just as we do in Graham. We can count on him when needed.”
The pressure is palpable. If the operation falters, it’s tough on the kicker. However, McAtamney made it clear that he wouldn’t make excuses. “I’m a professional kicker; that’s on me,” he stated.
The Giants had planned to lean on Koo Yong-hoe due to Graham Gano’s groin injury during warmups in Week 3 but ended up relying on the less experienced McAtamney, who had already missed a PAT against the Eagles. It was a challenging outcome for head coach Brian Daboll and the team.
