Stephen A. Smith Reflects on Confrontation with LeBron James
Stephen A. Smith still vividly recalls his tense face-off with LeBron James, where he expressed feeling “trapped” during their courtside encounter. This situation gained attention earlier this year during a Lakers game, with LeBron approaching Smith likely in response to criticism regarding how the Lakers were treating his son, Bronny James.
In March, Smith revealed that the tensions stemmed from critical remarks about Bronny that aired on television. “That wasn’t just a basketball player confronting me. That was a parent. A father,” Smith explained on ESPN shortly after. He acknowledged LeBron’s role as a devoted family man who deeply cares for his son, so, understandably, he didn’t feel disrespected during that interaction.
Smith recently revisited the incident on “7pm in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony.” He confided that he’s puzzled by the circumstances surrounding his discussion with LeBron, especially how it was captured on camera.
“The day he approached me courtside was also when news broke that I would be staying at ESPN,” Smith stated. He pointed out the oddity of only having one camera angle during such an event. In the age of advanced broadcasting, he wondered why there wasn’t a better view of the interaction. “Just think about it. You’re LeBron James, yet the only angle captured was right above, showing his face and not mine. Was that intentional?”
Though diving into speculative territory, Smith maintained that there’s a chance the scenario could have been orchestrated as a conflict. When asked if he felt prepared for such situations, he declared, “Absolutely. But honestly, it’s not a huge deal. The next day, I was able to look at it as a father defending his son.”
It’s important to note that Smith and James aren’t exactly on friendly terms. Smith has voiced his views on why he doesn’t appreciate LeBron’s attitude, going as far as to mention unresolved issues dating back over a decade. He expressed frustration, stating, “He’s done a lot that you wouldn’t believe. If he had his way, I wouldn’t be around today. That’s some seriously questionable behavior.”
As the 2025-26 NBA season approaches, it appears these difficulties are unlikely to be smoothed over anytime soon.
