Controversy Surrounds Trump’s Nominee for Special Counsel

President Trump’s selection to lead the Office of the Special Counsel has sparked controversy after leaked documents suggested he made troubling comments, including an admission of having “Nazi tendencies.”

Paul Ingrassia, who is scheduled for his Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday, allegedly sent this message in a text conversation with six Republican senators last year, as reported by Politico.

In a May 2024 message, Ingrassia purportedly wrote, “I sometimes have Nazi tendencies. I admit that.”

In another text, he reportedly stated that the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday “belongs in hell,” asserting, “MLK Jr. is the George Floyd of the 1960s and his ‘vacation’ is over, he should be thrown into the 7th circle of hell where it belongs,” which he allegedly wrote in January of last year.

He also expressed disdain for various holidays, saying, “No Mourinyon holidays…from Kwanzaa. From MLK Jr. day to Black History Month to Juneteenth,” and called for a need to “gut every single one of them.”

Ingrassia’s lawyer later contended that the texts might have been “manipulated” and suggested that some messages were meant to mock liberal perspectives.

“These texts appear to have been manipulated or provided with important context omitted. Even if the text is authentic, it is clearly self-deprecating, satirical humor poking fun at the fact that liberals bizarrely and routinely refer to MAGA supporters as ‘Nazis,’” said attorney Edward Andrew Palczyk.

Despite these defenses, Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed that Ingrassia’s nomination would not succeed, stating, “he’s not going to pass it.” This sentiment was echoed by three other Republican senators, including Rick Scott, who remarked, “I don’t support him. I can’t imagine how anyone could be anti-Semitic in this country. It’s wrong.”
