Hillary Clinton: Trump is ‘ruining’ the White House by turning it into a ballroom

Hillary Clinton: Trump 'destroying' White House with demolition for ballroom

Hillary Clinton Critiques Trump’s Ballroom Renovation

Hillary Clinton, the former Secretary of State, expressed her disapproval of President Trump’s initiative to renovate the White House’s East Room to create more ballroom space for state dinners and other ceremonial occasions.

She mentioned in a statement, “This isn’t his home. It’s your home, and he’s destroying it.” This critique was made via X.

The Trump administration initially announced the ballroom plans back in July, with demolition starting this past Monday. Initially estimated to cost around $200 million, the budget has now increased to $250 million. White House press secretary Karoin Levitt had indicated that the project wouldn’t involve any demolition.

On Monday, Trump called the project a venture funded by private donors, describing it as “something every president has dreamed of” for over a century. He stated, “The East Wing, which is completely separate from the White House itself, is being completely modernized as part of this process and will be more beautiful than ever when completed.” This was shared in a post on social media.

He continued, “For more than 150 years, every president has dreamed of having a ballroom in the White House to host major events. I am honored to be the first president to finally make this much-needed project happen at no expense to American taxpayers.”

However, critics argue that utilizing private funds raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest for the administration. Richard W. Painter, who was a chief ethics lawyer during George W. Bush’s administration, pointed out, “People who want to get along with the president will write checks,” suggesting a link between funders and access to the president.

He further remarked, “This is just a complete extension of the pay-to-play issues we’ve had within government for many years,” and emphasized a very transactional nature in these dealings.

Interestingly, Trump had proposed a similar ballroom concept during the Obama administration, but it didn’t gain traction.

Now, as he campaigns for his second term, Trump’s plan includes adding 90,000 square feet to the White House, accommodating up to 650 people with bulletproof glass seating.

Clark Construction is set to handle the ballroom construction, utilizing designs from McCrery Architects. Jim McCreary, the CEO of McCreary, highlighted, “Modern presidents face the challenge of hosting large-scale events at the White House, which has remained untouched since President Harry Truman.” He added, “I am honored that President Trump has entrusted me with helping renovate this beautiful and much-needed People’s Hall while preserving the elegance of its classic design and historical significance.”
