Tragic Incident in California: Father Charged After Son Drowns in Flood
A tragic event unfolded in California when a 2-year-old boy with autism drowned after the family’s car was engulfed by floodwaters during a storm, according to police reports from Tuesday.
Brandon Padilla Aguilera, aged 26, from Barstow, was returning home with his nonverbal son, Xavier, after attending his grandmother’s funeral on September 18. Unfortunately, he decided to drive through a flooded road, which led to the disaster.
As water quickly filled the car, the frantic father managed to escape with Xavier, but they became separated when the strong current swept the child away. Authorities shared that despite Padilla Aguilera’s quick exit, he fell to the ground but was rescued soon after. Sadly, Xavier’s body was located the following day in a nearby ditch.
Last week, more than a month after this heartbreaking incident, Padilla Aguilera was arrested. On Tuesday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office announced that he had been charged with murder, according to the Barstow Police Department.
Police mentioned that a month-long investigation involved witness interviews and evidence gathering, which ultimately led them to secure a warrant for his arrest. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office revealed that the charges against Padilla Aguilera include one count of gross vehicular manslaughter and another for child abuse under circumstances that could have caused severe injury or death.
