Democrats Propose Immigration Tracker
During a press conference on October 20th, Democratic lawmakers announced their plan to create a “master ICE tracker.” This tool aims to monitor and document immigration enforcement activities conducted by ICE, CBP, and additional law enforcement agencies.
Robert Garcia, the Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee from California, stated that the tracker would be hosted on the committee’s website, although it wasn’t clear if he was referring to the Democratic site or a publicly accessible platform.
Garcia remarked, “This is a reckless attack on law enforcement, endangering ICE officers and compromising public safety.”
He expressed strong opposition to the current immigration policies under the Trump administration, labeling ICE’s actions as “fraud” and “atrocities.” Garcia claimed that ICE often targets American citizens, specifically citing individuals who resemble him due to their Latino background.
On the new ICE tracker, Garcia mentioned, “We will track every instance we can verify, and the community will be able to send us information.” He expects the tool to be launched “in the coming weeks.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass joined Garcia in voicing her indignation about the immigration enforcement, contending that the treatment of undocumented immigrants could affect American citizens as well. “This can happen to anyone at any time,” she said.
Garcia commended Bass for her dedication to documenting the “horror and injustice” occurring in Los Angeles and across the nation.
Meanwhile, Garcia and Senator Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut wrote to the Department of Homeland Security seeking detailed information on disturbing reports of unlawful detentions of U.S. citizens. They claimed that President Trump is supporting the use of federal immigration agents to intimidate communities.
In response, White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson indicated that the Trump administration is committed to deporting criminal illegal aliens and ensuring accountability for those who disrupt law enforcement activities.
Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, criticized the Democrats’ initiative. He stated, “This reckless attack on law enforcement endangers ICE officers and undermines public safety.”
As of the time of this report, Garcia’s office had not responded to requests for comments.
