Trump Cancels San Francisco 'Surge' Following Mayor's Polite Request

On Thursday, President Trump announced that he would halt the concentration of federal law enforcement officials in San Francisco after a conversation with Mayor Daniel Lurie, who reassured him that “San Francisco’s future is great.” Earlier that day, Trump had dispatched hundreds of federal officers to the Bay Area, citing rising crime and corruption in the city.

Despite the federal plans, Mayor Lurie expressed his disapproval without personal attacks. Meanwhile, Governor Gavin Newsom encouraged Californians to protest what he called Trump’s “authoritarian strategy,” labeling the president a “dictator” in light of his history of surviving assassination attempts.

Later on, Trump shared on Truth Social that he had persuaded Lurie and others to reconsider their stance. He recounted receiving a call the night before from a friend urging Lurie not to proceed with the federal surge, as they were reportedly making headway in addressing the situation. Trump stated, “If we could do it, it would be easier, faster, stronger, safer. But let’s see how we do it.” He also noted that business leaders were optimistic about San Francisco’s future.

Trump mentioned that while the reforms in San Francisco hadn’t yet resulted in visibly cleaner streets, they were helping restore trust alongside the growth in artificial intelligence. Lurie acknowledged their conversation, made his case to Trump, and confirmed that the president had listened to his perspective.

In his conversation with Trump, Lurie conveyed that San Francisco is experiencing growth, with visitors and employees returning, and emphasized that while they seek support from federal agencies to tackle drug issues, a heavy military presence could hinder recovery efforts. Ultimately, he appreciated Trump’s understanding of the city’s role in the technology sector and stressed that a strong San Francisco contributes to a strong country.

Lurie, who took office last year, is determined to steer the city away from its recent challenges.
