Ontario Suspends Anti-Tariff Ads After Trump Terminates Trade Talks

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has decided to pause the anti-tariff advertising campaign that led President Trump to pull out of trade discussions with Canada. However, it will still air during World Series games featuring Canada’s only Major League Baseball team, which is a pretty big deal.

Ford mentioned that their goal was to start a dialogue about the type of economy Americans aspire to create and how tariffs could impact both workers and businesses. He noted, perhaps a bit proudly, that they reached a large U.S. audience and met their objectives.

“I’ve instructed our team to keep our message in front of the American public throughout the weekend so we can air commercials during the first two games of the World Series,” he added.

The campaign will feature a one-minute ad that broadcasts during the Toronto Blue Jays’ games against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Fox, scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights.

Last year’s Fall Classic saw substantial viewership, with over 15 million tuning in for Game 1. However, Trump announced on Thursday evening that he would cease trade negotiations with Canada, a move triggered by an extensive $75 million advertising initiative.

The Ontario ad showcases remarks from former President Ronald Reagan, dating back to an April 1987 radio address. In it, he pointed out that tariffs would likely fail in the long run and could negatively affect Americans. This historical context is, I think, somewhat compelling.

The president criticized the ad as “fake” and accused Canada of attempting to manipulate U.S. Supreme Court proceedings. The Court is expected to address whether Trump can impose certain tariffs next month.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute also reacted strongly, claiming that Ontario distorted Reagan’s comments by selectively using “audio and video” without permission, and they’re now looking into legal actions against the Ontario government.

The ad is set to air on multiple channels, including Newsmax, Bloomberg, Fox News, and more. Ford mentioned in a correspondence that Ontario would pause its U.S. advertising efforts starting Monday to allow for trade negotiations to resume.

“Our government was elected to protect Ontario, our families, and our communities, and that’s what I’m doing,” Ford stated. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between Canada and the U.S., referring to both countries as neighbors and allies.

Trump has levied a significant 35% tariff on Canadian products due to Canada’s challenges in controlling the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S. Additionally, the president has imposed sector-specific tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles.

Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s successor, Mark Carney, is reportedly attempting to reach an agreement with Trump to bring an end to this trade conflict.
