Democrats Acknowledge Need for Change
During a recent appearance on MSNBC’s “The Beat,” Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) emphasized the need for the Democratic Party to acknowledge voter dissatisfaction. He stated, “We recognize that many are unhappy with us. Change is essential; we must improve how we handle immigration and ensure our borders are secure. Admittedly, we haven’t done the best job there. The American people, I believe, are not looking for identity politics to dominate our discussions. That’s something we need to address.” He also mentioned that voters who supported Trump shouldn’t be dismissed as “racist, bigoted idiots.” Instead, he advocated for understanding their concerns and promising to address them.
Smith outlined a two-pronged approach to the Democratic message. First, he noted the pressing issue of what he sees as an authoritarian shift in governance under Trump. He argued that while Republicans can discuss policy, they often neglect the authoritarian implications of the president’s actions, which might be undermining the constitutional framework. He remarked on the detrimental effects of Trump’s policies, citing rising costs for housing, energy, and health care, alongside the negative impact on farmers and food security.
He added, “The third part of our message as Democrats is about improving our standing. We need to be proactive about immigration and border security—not just talk about it. It’s crucial to understand that many voters who chose Trump are not simply bigots; they have legitimate concerns. Treating them as adversaries isn’t helpful. We should open dialogues with them.” Smith also highlighted the need to extend outreach to areas where Democrats are less popular, referencing colleagues like Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) and Abigail Spanberger, who are actively trying to broaden their support base. “We can’t just preach to those who already agree with us,” he concluded.
