John Fetterman breaks from Democrats in shutdown vote, calls for prioritizing America

Government Shutdown Continues Amid Partisan Stalemate

The ongoing government shutdown marks the longest in U.S. history, with Democrats and Republicans at a standstill, particularly over health care funding.

Some senators have chosen to break party lines. Notably, Democratic Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania joined Republicans in supporting a measure to reopen the government. He’s now urging others to follow suit.

Fetterman, speaking on “Saturday in America,” stated, “Choosing your country over your party is a simple, easy choice, especially in situations like this.”

The Senate recently voted, but a Republican proposal to fund certain federal workers during the shutdown failed, coming in at 54-46, falling short of the necessary 60 votes. Only three Democrats, including Fetterman, sided with the Republicans on that vote.

Democrats are holding out for any funding bill to include an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies, which are set to expire in 2025. They argue that without action, millions may face rising insurance premiums come November.

Conversely, Republicans assert that the government must be reopened before any serious negotiations can start.

Fetterman explained the situation, suggesting, “A significant number of Democrats are cornered until we get an absolute ironclad deal.”

Despite the standoff, Fetterman expressed faith in Senate Minority Leader John Thune, a Republican, believing that discussions about health care will progress once the government reopens. “Let’s just open it,” he added.

He believes that once the government is operational again, there will be opportunities to explore extending tax credit agreements, as he thinks some Republicans are open to that idea.

Since the shutdown began on October 1, non-essential federal agencies have closed, delaying paychecks for many federal employees. As the shutdown reaches its fourth week, countless workers are still awaiting their first full paycheck.

Fetterman has raised concerns about the impact on federal nutrition programs, emphasizing a need for lawmakers to prioritize feeding people over their disagreements.

He noted that neither side is truly winning during this impasse and instead reflected on how the entire nation is suffering. “It’s like, ‘Am I winning? Am I losing?'” he remarked. “Because I guarantee America is losing here and now.”
