Gavin Newsom's account of 'hustling' to cover expenses raises questions, considering his family's connections to a wealthy heir.

Debate Surrounding Newsom’s Background

Governor Gavin Newsom’s portrayal of his upbringing has sparked some skepticism, particularly given his family’s connections to the late billionaire heiress Gordon Getty.

In a recent podcast episode of “All the Smoke,” Newsom discussed his early life and the impact of his mother’s divorce. He shared how his mother became pregnant at 19 and later divorced, raising him and his siblings under tight financial circumstances.

“My mother was young when she had me, and then she got divorced,” he recalled. “I went from having nothing to working hard. I had two and a half jobs… it wasn’t easy.”

“We always had roommates because she struggled to make rent,” he added. “It was about making ends meet—I was just there, pushing myself while eating simple meals like mac and cheese.”

Over the years, Newsom has consistently told a poignant story about his humble beginnings, perhaps aiming to resonate more with his audience.

For instance, he once mentioned sleeping on a couch during one summer, with his sister having to sleep in the hallway due to the lack of space.

However, detractors point out that Newsom’s father, William, was a former associate judge and had notable ties to the Getty estate.

William had such a close relationship with the Getty family that he even contributed to paying the ransom when John Paul Getty III was kidnapped.

William had previously indicated that his unsuccessful Senate campaign left him financially strained, which affected his ability to support Gavin’s mother.

“I made some poor choices financially that impacted my family,” he once said, referring to losing his law practice during that time.

He continued, “I was around wealthy individuals, but my family didn’t have money, and neither did Gavin.”

Yet, after graduating from Santa Clara University, Gavin launched a boutique winery with assistance from Getty.

A spokesperson for Newsom defended his narrative, saying, “Everyone knows Governor Newsom was raised by his mother, who juggled multiple jobs to support the family.”

Interestingly, Newsom attended a Catholic school for his early education.

In a lighter moment recently, he playfully poked fun at Vice President J.D. Vance, contrasting a glamorous photo of Vance with one of his own from high school.
