MSNBC hosts criticize Trump's ballroom plans while acknowledging their company is covering part of the costs

Awkward Moment for MSNBC

Recently, MSNBC’s hosts alerted viewers that their parent company, Comcast, is contributing to President Trump’s plans for a new ballroom at the White House. It’s a bit ironic, considering they’ve been critical of the project. According to a compilation from Status Newsletter, the network’s own Stephanie Rhule raised concerns on her show, “The 11th Hour,” stating, “Here’s the problem: Donors are paying for it. Corporations are paying for it—Comcast is one of those companies. Shouldn’t Americans be more concerned about that? No corporation is going to write a check without expecting something in return.”

Comcast is among several Fortune 500 companies backing the construction of a $300 million ballroom after Trump decided to demolish the East Wing of the White House.

Interestingly, while Comcast CEO Brian Roberts has faced criticism from Trump, the company is reportedly exploring an acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery as part of its strategy to reshape media in the U.S. Moreover, the Trump administration seems to favor rival bidder Paramount Skydance, as reported last week.

Commenting on the donations, David Frum, a regular on MSNBC, told host Nicole Wallace, “Everyone giving money to this, about $250 million, respects Comcast, but they’re expecting something in return. They’re not doing it just for the love of ballroom dancing,” referring to his disapproval of the entire endeavor.

It’s worth noting that a spokesperson for MSNBC opted not to comment on this situation.

As Comcast prepares to spin off its cable channels into a new entity called Versant, MSNBC will separate from NBC News, rebranding as MS NOW in the coming month. This marks a significant change in the channel’s 30-year history, as NBC News reporters have recently stopped appearing on MSNBC broadcasts.

Trump’s ambitious $300 million initiative to replace the East Wing has faced opposition from historians, preservationists, and Democrats, all of whom believe this move threatens a valuable piece of national heritage and could violate conservation laws. The White House, however, frames the project as a necessary modernization effort.

On a more personal note, Trump has criticized Roberts harshly, labeling him a “disgrace to broadcasting integrity,” and dismissively calling Comcast “scumbag” and “stupid,” even jokingly dubbing it “Concast.” He accuses Roberts of leading what he describes as a “corrupt” expansion of the Democratic Party through MSNBC’s programming, asserting that the network acts as a platform for partisan propaganda.

As of now, the Post has reached out to Comcast for a response.
