Campaign Turmoil for Maine’s Graham Platner

Graham Platner, a Democrat running for Senate in Maine, has faced some serious challenges recently. He’s trailing behind Republican Sen. Susan Collins and is reportedly behind Gov. Janet Mills, according to polling data.

Just days after former political director Genevieve McDonald stepped down from Platner’s campaign, his friend Kevin Brown announced that Platner himself would also be leaving his position as campaign manager.

“Graham deserves someone who is fully committed to his race,” Brown mentioned in his statement.

This month, Platner stirred controversy with several incendiary posts on Reddit. In these posts, he called out certain groups while making offensive jokes, demeaning police, and even suggested outlandish things regarding soldiers’ concerns about sexual assault.

McDonald quickly resigned from her role, expressing that she had been unaware of Platner’s earlier statements when she joined the campaign and could not align with such views as a candidate for Senate.

Following this, Platner issued an apology for his past comments on Reddit, but his troubles didn’t end there. A photograph circulated of him revealing a tattoo on his chest resembling a “Totenkopf,” a symbol associated with the Nazi regime.

In the background, figures like Sen. Martin Heinrich and Sen. Bernie Sanders have noted that a number of younger Democrats are still supporting Platner, despite his troubling statements and tattoo. Brown, a Democratic operative known for his work with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, hinted at stepping back after facing personal family commitments.

Brown stated that he wants to embrace this new chapter in his life, indicating his departure from the campaign was to ensure Platner finds a committed manager. His resignation coincided with reports that Platner’s campaign began sending non-disclosure agreements to staff, leading to further confusion.

McDonald revealed that when the campaign offered her a significant amount of money to sign an NDA, it was framed as severance. A spokesperson for Platner’s campaign mentioneda consulting firm had been brought on board to implement compliance measures.

Recent polling suggests that Mills maintains a slight lead over Platner, with findings showing her at 41% compared to Platner’s 36%. The political landscape for Maine Democrats continues to be uncertain as this situation unfolds.
