As the Trump administration intensifies its efforts against illegal immigration, there’s been a notable spike in threats and violent acts directed at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Recent figures from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reveal an astonishing 8,000% increase in death threats against these officers.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that these threats highlight the risks police officers face daily in their attempts to combat severe criminal activity. She specified, “Our police officers are being exposed to unprecedented levels of violence, including bounties for murder, threats against family members, stalking, and having personal information leaked online.”
McLaughlin further criticized “sanctuary politicians”, asserting that their relentless smear campaigns and inflammatory rhetoric—like comparisons to the Nazi Gestapo—have exacerbated the situation. She emphasized, “This violence against law enforcement must end.”
The DHS shared alarming examples of threats against ICE personnel and their families, including attempts to incentivize violence. For instance, Eduardo Aguilar, a Mexican national in Dallas, was arrested for allegedly encouraging the murder of an ICE officer through a deceptive TikTok post that offered $10,000 for the act.
In another instance from Texas, an ICE employee’s spouse received a threatening phone call, saying, “I hope your children get deported by mistake. How do you sleep? Have you heard what happened to the Nazis after World War II? Because that’s what’s going to happen to your family.”
A voicemail targeting an ICE agent this month expressed a wish for the agents to be arrested one by one, while another individual, James Adrian Warren, threatened the ICE office in Ferndale, Washington, calling them “Nazis” and vowing to make their lives difficult by surveilling them.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has made it clear that threats against ICE will not hinder their operations. According to the DHS, she asserted that ICE, along with their federal law enforcement partners, will persist in enforcing the law and will pursue severe penalties against those who obstruct them.
