US Air Force world champion gymnast stands up for restricted Team Israel

Patrick Hoopes Wins Bronze at World Gymnastics Championships

U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Patrick Hoopes recently earned a bronze medal in the pommel horse event at the World Gymnastics Championships in Indonesia. This achievement marks a significant milestone for him, as gymnastics has been a passion of his since he was just two years old, alongside his military commitments.

“It was truly an incredible experience. In gymnastics, especially in the U.S., there are a few major competitions to strive for: the U.S. Championships, the Olympics, and the World Championships. So, in a sense, this feels like a dream realized,” Hoopes shared.

He recalled the moments leading up to his performance, noting, “I thought I might make some small mistakes. I could feel it, but when I completed the routine and saluted the judges, I felt this rush of excitement. When the last competitor was out and I realized I was in third, it just hit me—I never imagined I’d achieve the title of world medalist until I was older.”

However, the event wasn’t entirely focused on celebration. The backdrop of the championship was overshadowed by a significant controversy. The Indonesian government denied visas to the Israeli team, preventing them from participating. The decision was attributed to fears of protests and security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which restricted Israeli athletes from entering the country.

“I can’t say if everyone was really upset, but there was a sense of disappointment about Israel’s absence. People recognized the hard work they put in to compete at this level. It’s disheartening when athletes from any nation face barriers that are out of their control,” Hoopes stated.

The ban sparked international condemnation, with the International Olympic Committee publicly denouncing the decision and halting discussions with Indonesia for future Olympic events. They also recommended against hosting international sports in the country.

In defense of the action, Indonesia’s Sports Minister Eric Tohir remarked, “Our priority is to ensure safety and public order at any international event.” Hoopes expressed empathy towards the affected Israeli athletes, recognizing their dedication and effort.

“For those athletes, who are not directly involved in the broader issues at home, it’s really tragic. They train hard for opportunities like this, and having that taken away is quite sad,” he added.

Looking ahead, Hoopes is eager to compete in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, alongside Team Israel’s gymnasts. In the meantime, he plans to focus on the World Military Games in North Carolina in 2027 and the upcoming World Championships in the following years.
