NFL Trade Deadline Speculation
The NFL trade deadline tends to be one of the most exaggerated days in the sports calendar. Every year, there’s buzz about significant trades, yet we often find ourselves let down. The most talked-about transactions frequently center around lesser-known players that, honestly, very few people talk about.
However, things might change in 2025. The NFL is leaning into equality and aims to maintain a competitive scene. Plus, injuries have impacted teams in some unexpected ways. So, perhaps expect some surprises that could lead to a flurry of activity.
We considered several trades that seemed like they could happen at the deadline and who might be on the move.
Tuba Hubbard to New England Patriots
The Patriots should definitely aim to be active at the trade deadline, trying to escalate the intensity of their offense. I mean, I get it: gasoline ignites only when aerosolized, but you catch my drift.
Tuba Hubbard has improved as a running back since 2025. With Carolina’s offensive line suffering from injuries, much of the chemistry he had built last season has diminished. He currently finds himself on the sidelines with Rico Doodle taking the spotlight. Depending on the Panthers’ strategy with rookie Trevor Etienne, Hubbard’s role might shrink even further.
New England, if they plan to make a playoff push, needs more than just “Drake Maye throwing bombs.” They have a solid running game, but they require someone better than LaMondre Stephenson, who’s currently nursing a toe injury. A robust lineup of running backs fits Mike Vrabel’s football philosophy, and Hubbard could probably come at a reasonable cost.
This seems to be a situation where the Panthers are looking for a dynamic pass-catching running back while the Patriots are in search of a powerful force in their running back lineup.
Adam Thielen to Seattle Seahawks
The Vikings traded for Thielen ahead of the 2025 season, but his presence has been largely underutilized. If this indeed happens to be his last season, he should have the chance to contend, and then, perhaps later, sign a one-day contract to officially retire in Minnesota.
Seattle is an intriguing option for him. They are currently playing some impressive offensive football, yet they lack depth at wide receiver. Should the Seahawks manage to capitalize on this momentum and make the playoffs, having Jackson Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp, and Adam Thielen as their primary targets would certainly be fascinating.
Interestingly, Sam Darnold and Thielen’s paths didn’t cross while they were in Carolina, but their styles seem to complement each other well. It would also be kind of cool to see them team up in Seattle, a partnership that I kind of wish would’ve happened back in Minnesota.
Jacobi Meyers to Green Bay Packers
Following a significant trade to acquire Micah Parsons, the Packers could consider another move to cement their status as a serious Super Bowl contender. Several teams have shown interest in Jacobi Meyers, but his $11 million cap hit poses a challenge. Still, fitting him into the slot could be ideal; the Packers have the financial space and it might just put them over the edge.
Given that Green Bay has done remarkably well with Romeo Doubs and Matthew Golden leading their receiving corps, Meyers could be the push they need. While Doubs has shown pretty good flashes, Golden doesn’t seem quite ready yet. With Christian Watson returning, bringing in another able receiver could help alleviate some pressure and open things up for the running game.
Rik Uhlen to Detroit Lions
A deal like this could serve as a win-win for Rik Uhlen and the Detroit Lions.
Uhlen had a strong rookie season, racking up six interceptions and making a name for himself as a contender for Defensive Rookie of the Year. However, with Mike McDonald’s arrival, his performance has tapered off, potentially due to some mismatches in scheme. McDonald’s system leans heavily on zone coverage, while Uhlen seems to excel in man coverage.
I mean, his passer rating when playing zone coverage has not been great. In fact, he allowed an NFL passer rating of 100.0 when targeted in such situations this season. In contrast, when in a man-coverage role, he’s seen much better success with a passer rating of 57.6. With Detroit running man coverage more frequently, this trade could be a perfect fit.
Rashid Shahid to Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills are reportedly looking for wide receiver assistance as the trade deadline approaches. Teams like the Steelers and Broncos are in similar boats.
According to reports, the New Orleans Saints have some depth at wide receiver, notably Chris Olave and Rashid Shahid. ESPN’s Adam Schefter pointed out that Shahid might be the more likely candidate to be traded.
Pairing him with Josh Allen could potentially elevate their offense. Shahid has seen ten targets for deep passes this season, but only managed to catch two of those. If Allen can connect with him on those attempts, it could really benefit the Bills.
It’s a crucial time for Buffalo to address their downfield passing game. They’ve recorded several deep throws this season, but have not seen the success they’d hoped for.
Kevin Zeitler to Seattle Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks don’t have a long list of urgent needs heading into the 2025 trade deadline.
However, one might argue that solidifying their left guard position could help. Sam Darnold has performed well this season, leading several key metrics for quarterback performance. Still, he experiences a noticeable drop in efficiency when pressured compared to when he has a clean pocket.
Strengthening the right guard slot might be a smart play for Seattle, especially since Kevin Zeitler is going to be a free agent next season. The Titans may not want to lose him without getting something in return, so a trade could make sense.
AJ Brown to Pittsburgh Steelers
Let’s be honest here; given their financial constraints, moving AJ Brown from the Eagles seems almost impossible.
But purely from an entertainment perspective, it would be interesting to see him move across Pennsylvania to play alongside DK Metcalf and catch passes from Aaron Rodgers.
Just picture how that would blow up on social media. Honestly, it would be quite something to witness.
