Tragic Overdose Linked to Gang Arrests in NYC

A Colorado teen tragically lost his life due to a fentanyl overdose after purchasing drugs from a group arrested in Washington Square Park on Thursday. Sources indicate that Bailey Shaw, just 18 years old, had moved to New York last year to start an internship with a nonprofit and assist in directing a Broadway theater.

Shaw is among two individuals who died within a six-month period last year after acquiring drugs from a network known as WSP Enterprises, according to officials.

Described as a “rising star” from Aspen, Shaw was set to begin an internship with Broadway Cares when she overdosed in June 2024, as shared by her family with the Aspen Daily News.

“Bailey had to do this. New York City was her dream, and we were thrilled about her new journey,” reflected her father, Daniel Shaw. “She was incredibly funny, complex, and though she faced challenges, she truly found her passion in theater and her community.”

A recent graduate of Aspen High School, Shaw was also slated to assist in staging the Broadway Bears, known for its burlesque-style performances at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

The local theater director, Casey Tracik, expressed his connection to Shaw, emphasizing her drive and passion. “Just stepping into the room is transformative and speaks volumes about who Bailey was. We knew she was someone special and aimed to capture that spirit.”

On Thursday, authorities indicted around 20 dealers involved in a federal case for systematically distributing dangerous drugs in and around the park, which has led to a troubling increase in overdoses.
