Incident Involving Chicago Woman and CBP Raises Questions
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) claims a recent incident with a Chicago resident illustrates how civilians are increasingly interjecting in immigration enforcement activities. On October 10, Dayanne Figueroa was arrested after federal agents attempted to pursue a vehicle suspected of transporting illegal immigrants.
In a video of the event, CBP agents can be seen placing a suspect into a red vehicle, while a white SUV blocks the street, preventing Figueroa from moving forward. As the footage continues, things escalate when the red car moves away, and the white SUV pursues it.
Figueroa, attempting to follow the red car, tried to squeeze through a tight space between the SUV and a parked car. However, her efforts fell short, and the SUV collided with the left side of her vehicle.
Just as she was leaving the area, a CBP agent in a white SUV stopped her, leading to several agents pulling her from her car and making the arrest. It’s reported that she resisted their attempts.
Activists quickly came to Figueroa’s defense, claiming she was wrongfully detained and asserting there was no justification for her arrest.
If you check out the video, it’s clear this is not just a case of a woman being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
However, Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, presented a different narrative regarding Figueroa’s involvement. She stated, “CBP was conducting a targeted enforcement action when this woman, a U.S. citizen, used her Mercedes-Benz to block the agent and then rammed the agent’s vehicle. Out of concern for public safety and law enforcement, officers tried to remove her from the vehicle.”
McLaughlin further added that Figueroa kicked two law enforcement officers, injuring them, and highlighted that this incident was part of a troubling trend of civilians obstructing law enforcement activities.
She even criticized local news outlets for portraying situations that favor those who oppose law enforcement, calling them a “full-time PR firm for criminals and instigators of violence.” This incident underscores the increasing issue in Chicago where civilians interfere with immigration officers in the line of duty.
Since the implementation of Operation Midway Blitz, federal agents have faced numerous challenges during their enforcement efforts.
Weeks later, Figueroa mentioned that she was released without charges and maintains her innocence, alleging mistreatment by federal agents.
