California Seeks Release for Convicted Pedophile Due to Health Issues

California is considering a release for a man convicted of multiple horrific rapes after he was diagnosed with dementia. His case raises significant concerns among those affected.

Ramiro Ruiz was sentenced to 85 years to life back in 1998 for committing horrific crimes, which included the repeated sexual assault and drugging of children. Reports indicate he even chained his victims.

On Monday, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation appeared in court in Madera County, seeking permission to release the now 86-year-old before he dies. The argument put forth was that his age and declining health made him a lesser threat to society.

However, prosecutor Eric Dutemple was quick to express opposition, emphasizing that “this guy was clearly a monster then, and he remains a monster now.” He referred to Ruiz’s designation as a sadistic pedophile during earlier court proceedings.

The victims of Ruiz’s crimes were aged between 5 and 15 years, with one being developmentally disabled. Ruiz has also been diagnosed with sexual sadism disorder and pedophile disorder.

Dutemple further noted that the court’s decision hinges on whether Ruiz still poses a risk of committing similar acts, emphasizing the need to protect the public.

Madera County District Attorney Sally Moreno reinforced concerns that Ruiz could still pose a danger to children if released. “This was likely one of the most heinous sex crimes I’ve seen in over 20 years,” Moreno stated. “Sure, he’s old at 86, but that doesn’t mean he can’t inflict serious harm on young children.”

The judge ultimately denied the request, pointing out that there are no children present in prison for him to abuse. “His conviction remains firm, and the victims were assured that he would serve his sentence,” Moreno added.

The defense attorney, Aaron Montoya, mentioned that he might pursue compassionate release again in the future.
