Who is Rama Duwaji? Introducing New York City's first Gen Z first lady

Rama Dowaj, the upcoming first lady of New York City as the wife of Zoran Mamdani, is set to make history as the city’s first Gen Z first lady. Although the 28-year-old tends to keep a low profile, her contributions behind the scenes have been significant.

As reported, Dowaj was instrumental in shaping her husband’s campaign branding. She finalized the distinctive color palette of yellow, orange, and blue, along with the bold iconography that defined his campaign. Additionally, she played a key role in developing Mamdani’s digital strategy and enhancing his social media presence. Throughout his political ascent, she has been a crucial source of personal support.

Even though she opted out of some public discussions, Dowaj made a point to celebrate her husband and his achievements during the campaign.

On June 24, after former Governor Andrew Cuomo conceded in the Democratic primary, Dowaj stood alongside Mamdani as he delivered his victory speech.

On that day, she also shared a purikura photo of them together on Instagram with a proud caption. The couple voted together, and although Dowaj hasn’t spoken extensively about Mamdani’s victory in the general election, she was there to support him on stage when the results were announced.

Who is Rama Dowaj?

A native of Texas, Dowaj holds a master’s degree in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Earlier, she earned a bachelor’s degree in communication design from Virginia Commonwealth University.

In a discussion back in June 2022, she mentioned that during the pandemic, she lived in Dubai with her family but always dreamed of moving to New York, which she accomplished around 2021.

Now residing in Brooklyn, Dowaj works as an illustrator and animator. Her portfolio includes collaborations with various notable outlets like The New Yorker, BBC, and Apple. Besides digital art, she also creates handmade ceramics, as detailed on her portfolio website.

What does she think about political issues?

Dowaj often channels her political and humanitarian concerns into her artwork. Her social media features illustrations addressing issues like the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the representation of Middle Eastern women.

These themes resonate with her husband’s outspoken views on government actions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly following the escalation that began on October 7, 2023.

Her artistic expression also reflects global issues; for instance, she created a poignant piece related to the Sudanese civil war in April 2023, aimed at raising awareness about its impact on civilians and refugees.

Discussing her work in April, Dowaj shared that her art often emerges from her experiences and the causes that matter to her, fostering community discussions around those topics organically.

How did Dowaj and Mamdani meet?

During a podcast on June 17, Mamdani playfully recounted how he and Dowaj met through the dating app Hinge, offering a light-hearted note about finding love online.

The timeline of their meeting remains somewhat vague, but Mamdani later posted a photo taken by Dowaj in April 2022.

The couple seemed to announce their engagement in October 2024 through a social media post, which included a ring emoji with a playful hashtag announcing their relationship.

They tied the knot in early 2025 during a public ceremony at the city clerk’s office, followed by a celebratory gathering with his campaign team.
