Former DOJ Official Acquitted for Assault on Federal Officer

A former Justice Department official, who made headlines for throwing a sandwich at a federal officer during a law enforcement operation related to President Trump’s actions in Washington, was acquitted of assault charges on Thursday. This outcome marks another blow to federal prosecutors amid ongoing scrutiny of their methods.

After the incident gained traction online, Sean Charles Dunn became somewhat of a symbol for those resisting Trump’s decision to deploy federal agents in the capital. His acquittal on the misdemeanor charge adds to the challenges prosecutors are facing, especially regarding how they manage cases arising from various law enforcement agencies.

While it was clear that Dunn tossed a sandwich at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer on August 10, his defense contended that this act was merely a “harmless gesture” protected by the First Amendment during a protest.

Prosecutors asserted that Dunn was fully aware that he was crossing a line by throwing the sandwich at officers.

Upon hearing the verdict, Dunn embraced his lawyers and expressed his relief, mentioning he was eager to “move on with my life.”

A grand jury had previously declined to pursue a felony charge against Dunn, which illustrates the rising discontent with the Justice Department’s handling of cases linked to this crime surge narrative. Following a rare rebuke from the grand jury, the U.S. Attorney’s office charged Dunn with misdemeanors.

During the incident, Dunn confronted a group of CBP officers outside a club known for its “Latin Night,” labeling them “fascists” and “racists,” and hurling accusations like “shame” in their direction. Surveillance footage captured the moment he threw the sandwich at one of the officers.

“Why are you here? I don’t want you in my town!” Dunn reportedly shouted at the officers.

After fleeing the scene, he was arrested but subsequently released. He was later rearrested when armed federal agents in riot gear descended on his home. Dunn’s legal team claims the White House even shared a carefully crafted video of the raid on their social media account.

Dunn had previously served as an international affairs specialist within the DOJ’s Criminal Division. Following his arrest, he was dismissed by Attorney General Pam Bondi, who referred to him as “an example of the deep state” in a social media post.

His attorneys argued for the case’s dismissal, suggesting the prosecution was both selective and vindictive, pointing out that statements from Bondi and the White House signaled an unacceptable targeting of Dunn for his political expressions.
