Blues goalie shares details about the viral moment with Alex Ovechkin and the puck

Jordan Binnington Reflects on Allowing Ovechkin’s 900th Goal

St. Louis Blues goalie Jordan Binnington shared his thoughts right after he let Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin score his historic 900th goal. It seems like Binnington had a bit of a struggle with a rebound, allowing the puck to slip behind his gear. The linesman promptly retrieved the puck from him as he stood there, a bit taken aback.

Ovechkin, speaking post-game after the Capitals’ convincing 6-1 victory, was asked about the milestone. He mentioned, “Oh, I just saw it,” but then added, “You know, I’m not going to comment on that.” It looks like Binnington has plans to return the puck to Ovechkin, which is kind of nice, really.

Reflecting on the moment, Binnington joked, “Yeah, I thought I basically assisted on the goal there and turned the puck over. I didn’t think he was willing to share it. I was going to give it back to him.” It’s a fun little quip that showed he has a sense of humor about it.

By the way, Ovechkin made headlines back in April when he overtook Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s all-time leading scorer. Now, scoring 900 goals? That’s a whole new level. The puck even made it back in time for a team photo celebrating Ovechkin’s achievement, which is a nice touch.

Binnington, who faced four goals before getting ejected in the second period during that game, praised Ovechkin’s skill, saying, “It was an unbelievable play for him to catch that, turn and put it on net from a bad angle. Obviously, he’s such a legendary player. To see plays like this still being made at his age, it’s next level. He continues to impress.”

Interestingly, Ovechkin’s teammate Logan Thompson had a cheeky take on the situation, suggesting Binnington might have been trying to snag the puck for himself. It’s all in good fun, though; Binnington appeared to agree with that assessment, reinforcing his desire to return the puck. He said, “I plan on paying it all back. He’s a legend and an inspiration for this game and this league. It’s a good moment for him and the team.”
