Democratic candidates in key states reacted to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, suggesting that the U.S. deserved the 9/11 attacks. Samuel Smeltzer, an IT specialist who goes by “Elyon Badger,” is running for office in Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, which is held by Republican Tom Barrett, according to reports.
Smeltzer openly celebrated Kirk’s assassination. He mentioned that his views on the U.S. and the 9/11 attacks led to his ban from X, previously known as Twitter. He shared sentiments about the necessity of overcoming evil, apparently justifying his reactions to tragic events.
On the same day Kirk was killed, Smeltzer posted a disturbing image of a skeleton in a Nazi hat, remarking that he was glad about the death of all Nazis. He further claimed that the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson was a way to alleviate his personal depression. Additionally, he suggested extreme measures against wealthy people, advocating for the use of guillotines to execute them and making comments about burning their properties.
Smeltzer has also directed hostility towards U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), openly calling for dire actions against its agents. His posts reflect a deeply confrontational stance, discussing policies that would involve sending ICE members to concentration camps if he were to win his campaign.
The intensity surrounding ICE operations has sparked outrage and protests in cities like Chicago and Portland. Riots have erupted, with some demonstrators demanding arrests of ICE agents. Tensions escalated in a recent incident where a shooting at an ICE office in Dallas resulted in multiple fatalities.
Smeltzer has not yet provided a comment regarding recent events or his statements.
