Tragic Death of a Bronx Shelter Resident

A man, described as kind and gentle by those who knew him, lost his life after experiencing months of alleged abuse from his suspected attacker. This tragic incident occurred at a Bronx shelter, where the victim, a 48-year-old resident known only as Joey, was found fatally injured in a stairwell.

Witnesses reported that the horrific scene was discovered shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Saturday night, with blood evident in the hallway of the shelter located on East 162nd Street.

“We saw blood stains in the stairwell, and sadly, he passed away right there,” recounted Shannon, 29, a friend of Joey’s from the shelter.

In a related incident, another 39-year-old man sustained injuries to his arm during the altercation. Police quickly apprehended 33-year-old Tiquan McBride at the scene, charging him with multiple offenses including murder and attempted murder, as confirmed by the New York City Police Department.

According to other residents, McBride had been intimidating Joey for many months, coercing him for money that Joey earned by collecting cans.

“A few months ago, that guy tried to kick in my door,” Shannon shared. “I advised Joe to steer clear of him.” She noted that some residents struggled with mental health issues, mentioning people with unusual nicknames.

It was suggested by many that McBride was known as a troublemaker within the shelter.

“He was such a good guy, you couldn’t help but like him,” remarked another resident, Marcus Brown, 55. “You just couldn’t say no to Joey.”

On the night of the incident, it was reported that Joey was heard running through the hallway, banging on doors and crying for help. Unfortunately, he was murdered before anyone could assist him.

After a 911 call was made, first responders arrived only to pronounce Joey dead at the scene.

“He always greeted everyone with a smile,” Shannon expressed. “Living in this neighborhood isn’t easy, but he managed to bring joy. He’d even give away his last shirt if you needed it.”

“I really believe this could have been avoided,” she added, expressing frustration over a perceived lack of action regarding the alleged threat McBride posed.

In response to the tragedy, residents gathered outside the building on Sunday, lighting candles and sharing music in memory of Joey.
