Charges Filed Against Former Lawyer for Threatening Pro-Life Activists
A former lawyer from Conway, South Carolina, faces charges for allegedly threatening a pro-life activist with a grenade, which authorities later determined was inoperative.
The incident took place around 10 a.m. on November 2 outside St. Anne’s Episcopal Church on Main Street, where pro-life activists had gathered. It was reported on Monday that police responded after the suspect, identified as Richard Loveless, approached a group of four activists who were protesting on the sidewalk.
Loveless allegedly approached the activists holding what looked like a grenade. Footage shared by the pro-life organization “Survivors” captured the moment, where Loveless seemed to realize the seriousness of the situation. When questioned about the grenade, he reportedly replied, “For you guys.”
The group stated that their protest was aimed at opposing the views of many congregants and leaders from the church, including Loveless’s wife, who actively support the Palmetto State Abortion Fund. This fund collaborates with Planned Parenthood to facilitate access to abortion services and substances.
As the video circulated on social media, users reacted strongly, with some expressing disbelief over the incident and others suggesting it represents a broader issue within political discourse.
After the confrontation, Loveless returned inside the building and subsequently handed the device to another individual, according to law enforcement reports.
Authorities noted that the warrant against Loveless states that the protesters feared for their safety, as he displayed the grenade in a way that suggested it could be functional. However, police confirmed that the detonator had been removed.
Loveless was later released on $60,000 bail and now faces four counts for possessing a faux grenade or destructive device, as well as using it to intimidate others.
This incident follows reports of increasing violence against pro-life activists. Previously, a Catholic pro-life advocate was attacked during an interview in New York City, showcasing a concerning trend of aggression against those holding opposing views.
