Pinker Acknowledges Some Truth in Trump’s Critique of Harvard

Harvard psychology professor Steven Pinker recently suggested there’s “a grain of truth” to President Donald Trump’s comment about Harvard being a “liberal mess.” In an interview with CBS’ Bill Whitaker on “60 Minutes,” Pinker elaborated on the president’s assertion that the university is dominated by a radical left agenda.

When asked if Trump’s remarks hold any merit, Pinker responded, “That’s not true, no. I don’t agree with that idea. I think there should be more voices on the right at Harvard.” This perspective, while acknowledging Trump’s harsh language, implies that perhaps there’s room for a broader range of opinions at the institution.

Government Action Against Harvard

In related news, the Trump administration has been actively scrutinizing elite universities for instances of anti-Semitism. Earlier this year, Trump announced the withdrawal of over $2.2 billion in federal funding from Harvard, citing their failure to follow the Federal Anti-Semitism Task Force’s recommendations. However, a Boston judge intervened in September, blocking this funding cut.

Pinker voiced his concern about the control over acceptable voices in academia. “I think there are far too many incidents where someone expresses a controversial opinion and gets shamed or canceled,” he stated. This speaks to a larger issue of intellectual diversity within universities.

When questioned about where he believes Harvard has faltered, Pinker mentioned specific incidents, including those involving former Harvard professor Carol Houben, who faced lack of support from administrators after discussing her biological sex during a Fox News interview.

Houben had previously stated, “It seems like the ideology is that biology isn’t actually as important as how someone feels about themselves or how they feel about their gender.” She asserted that “the reality is that there are two sexes, male and female, and those sexes are specified by the types of gametes we produce.”

As this dialogue continues, it’s clear that the intersection of ideology and academia remains a contentious topic for many at institutions like Harvard.
