Sunny Hostin Critiques Democrats After Government Shutdown Deal
On Monday, “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin strongly criticized Democrats, remarking that the era of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer may be coming to an end. This statement followed a vote where eight senators sided with Republicans on a government funding plan.
Hostin expressed her discontent, saying, “This was the Republican choice to cut the ACA Subsidy. This was a Republican decision that undermined the federal government and jobs. The Democratic Party wasn’t involved in this. I want to see an opposition party that actually stands up. It feels like the Democratic Party has just given up. They’ve let the American people down, and, like you, Whoopi [Goldberg], I don’t believe Republicans will negotiate in good faith,” she commented.
She continued, expressing frustration, “Shame on you the first time. Shame on me for letting you do it again. It’s disappointing to see Democrats thinking Republicans will actually vote in favor.” Hostin emphasized the importance of an opposition party, saying, “The American people sent a clear message when the Democrats had a blue wave: ‘We want a fight.’ Yet here we are, with Democrats yielding and surrendering instead. I really think Chuck Schumer’s time has passed. If he can’t unite his caucus, he should step aside and let someone else take the lead.”
In a surprising turn, eight senators, including Sen. Angus King (D-Maine), Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania), and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), crossed party lines to support the Republicans in advancing the plan that ended the government shutdown.
Co-hosts Alyssa Farrar Griffin and Sarah Haines voiced their approval of ending the shutdown, with Griffin labeling the decision as “welcome.” This comes after an earlier interview in March when they questioned Schumer after he backed a Republican spending bill meant to fund the government until September.
During that exchange, Hostin confronted Schumer directly, saying, “I don’t say this lightly since we’re friends, but I believe you’ve caved.” She criticized him for not demonstrating the aggressive stance needed for the party, insisting he was playing by outdated rules while his opponents disregarded them altogether.
In recent months, while seeking to extend Obamacare subsidies, Schumer and most Senate Democrats had consistently voted against resolutions to fund the government. This shutdown is now set to endure for 40 days, marking the longest in U.S. history.
