Harris Critiques Democratic Party’s Treatment of Black Women

Former Vice President Kamala Harris expressed concern that Democrats have “taken Black women for granted” as the 2024 elections approach. In a recent podcast appearance on Storehouse & Friends, she was asked about any conflicts between her identity and her “racially agnostic” presidential campaign.

Harris indicated that the Democratic Party often overlooks issues important to Black women, a topic she delves into in her book, 107 Days. She remarked, “I think the Democratic Party has taken black women for granted. There are very specific issues that affect Black women in America that should be a top priority. When I was vice president, I made them a priority, including Black maternal mortality rates.”

She elaborated on the importance of addressing health issues, such as postpartum care and maternity assistance, stating, “If you look at what’s happening now with this person in office, he’s cutting funding for scientific research if it includes the words ‘women’ or ‘black’.”

Moreover, Harris pointed out the need for further research on uterine fibroids, which disproportionately affect Black women. “I’m never going to be ashamed of who I am,” she asserted, emphasizing her commitment to authenticity regarding her race and gender.

In her recently published book, which chronicles her brief presidential campaign that ended in a loss to President Donald Trump, Harris also criticizes notable Democratic figures for their lack of support during the campaign. She wrote about the perception among some that her success would diminish Biden’s, stating, “Their thinking was zero-sum: When she shines, he dims. Nobody understood that if I did well, he did well.”

With a national book tour underway, Harris appears determined to highlight these critical issues and her experiences in the political arena.
